The Interior
series of paintings started with a series of small doorways
done as part of my Moroccan collection. Through collage and
paint these small doorways were developed to include patterned
floors and walls. The pieces became very dark and the intensity
of the room was only broken by stained glass windows showing
the distant ocean.
My friends
started to refer to my time in the room, and I must say for
the time I was preoccupied with the room themes they were
places in which I spent many hours. Each object in the room
was placed with careful consideration and even to myself the
chests were closed, the windows locked and the light source
around the doorways unknown. The Interiors became larger and
staircases became the dominant feature. Pattern was still
a strong feature. At the top of the staircase would always
be a source of light.
For several
years staircases and rooms were an ongoing precoccupation,
now colour has become more dominant and as a result changed
the mood and atmosphere in my painting. My recent work still
includes the room, but with these developments, future series
should become more expansive and will be of great interest
to viewers and buyers of my work.
